Rusch Offshore Services supported Taqa Energy BV with the refurbishment and 3-meter extension of the crane boom for a 15 tons Kenz offshore crane.

With over 25 years of experience, Rusch is renowned for its crane repair department. Few of our crane customers know, however, that we also have an experienced Offshore department.

Refurbishment and modification of 15 tons Kenz Offshore crane boom

During the inspection of the crane, it was reported that the crane boom needed to be replaced due to its reduced wall-thickness. The crane owner bought an identical used offshore crane.

In close cooperation with our client and Lloyds Register Supervision, Rusch Offshore Services started the process for the refurbishment and the 3-meter extension of the crane boom.

The Rusch Engineers provided our client with a description of the process for the refurbishment and the extension. This workplan, which included NDT investigation of the used crane boom, the plan of repairs, and the welding processes, were to be approved by Lloyd Register. After approval by the Lloyds engineers, Rusch Offshore started the project in collaboration with our client and under the continued supervision of Lloyds Register.

Certified steel was used for the extension of the boom. For a boom extension it is very important to have the construction in a perfect alignment. To execute this the proper way, the know-how and experiences of the crane boom experts with this kind of work is needed. All the welds in the boom lacings in relation to the boom extension were checked by an independent party on basis of the X-ray method. The existing welds were checked 100% by MPI.

After sandblasting and coating by a third party, the boom was ready to be installed.
